THE GEAR

The gear we recommend is a good camera and the holy trinity.  A wide-angle lens.  14-24mm or something similar.  A 24-70mm or something similar and, of course, a 70-200mm or something similar.

If you do not have these particular lenses, do not worry; something similar will be just fine. It would be best if you also had a tripod.

This is without a doubt the most visited attraction in the city. The Parthenon is well known all over the world for its beautiful stonework and is a can’t miss a photo opportunity. The best time to visit would be earlier in the morning because it gets extremely busy.

2. Ancient Agora

This was the location of the marketplace in ancient times and would house shopping stalls and areas for discussion. There are many interesting spots inside such as the long corridors, garden space, street art, and old statues.

3. Mount Lycabettus

If you are looking for a great panoramic view of the city, head up to Mount Lycabettus for your photos. It is a limestone hill that sits above Athens and has stunning, uninterrupted views of the city below.

4. Plaka

This is the oldest neighborhood in the city but just as picturesque as anything else in Athens. There are lots of colorful homes here that show up great on camera and paint the perfect picture of the city.

5. Temple of Olympian Zeus

This temple was created for none other than the ruler of all gods. It took over six centuries to complete but only 16 of the gigantic columns are still standing. This looks like a remarkable piece of history and is huge in size.

6. Arch of Hadrian

This is located very close to the Temple of Zeus and it divides the old city of Theseus from the new city of Hadrian. You can capture the Acropolis and the Parthenon from certain angles which makes this an interesting place to photograph.

7. Syntagma Square

This is a central square in the city and is the location where the political activity takes place. You can head to this location on Sundays to capture pictures of the changing of the guards process.

8. Modern Olympic Stadium

This is a bit of the modern world that has made it into the city. For those that do want something a bit more similar to that of the world today, you can head to this modern Olympic Stadium for your shots. The iron arches make for very interesting shots.

9. Panathenaic Stadium

This is the sports stadium of the past. Also known as Kallimrmaro, this is the location where many competitions took place and is the only place in the world to have hosted three Olympic games. The entire stadium is made of marble which really makes for a stunning shot.

10. Monastiraki Square

Monastiraki Square is one of the main shopping areas in the city so it is great if you want to capture what everyday life looks like in Athens. There is a flea market to explore as well as Hadrian’s Library and the Ancient Agora nearby.

11. Temple of Poseidon at Sounion

This is located outside the city of Athens but is also a recommended place for people to visit. The acropolis was recently restored and the area looks beautiful especially at sunset when the light reflects off of the white marble that was used to build it.

12. Byzantine Churches

There is no shortage of churches here and dozens were built in the city back in the 11th and 12th century. They are located throughout the city and are in various states depending on how much they have decayed over the years.

13. Anafiotika

This area is made up of so many alleyways that it creates somewhat of a maze to explore. The houses in the area are white and blue and are similar to those that are in Anafi which is an island in the Cyclades.

14. Yiasemi Steps

Also known as the steps of Mnisiklis and named after the architect that played a part in designing the Acropolis, these are located in the Plaka neighborhood and are an extremely picturesque spot. There are lots of cafes that line this area and is a great place for locals to hang out.

Located further down the Dionysiou Areopagitou street, this is an ancient theater that is still used to this day. You can find some cool performances here as well as excellent acoustics. You are also able to see the Acropolis from here which makes for a fun picture.

16. Temple of Hephaestus

If you are hoping to see a Greek temple back like how they were in the past, the Temple of Hephaestus is a good option. It is the best-preserved temple in the country with an Ancient Agora inside as well as beautiful views from all angles.

17. National Library

This library looks magnificent with Greek-style pillars up front and a long staircase that leads to the door. It was designed as a part of a revival project of neoclassical buildings. It is also one of the first buildings of the University of Athens.

18. Zappeion Mansion
