The Thunderbirds are the United States Air Force’s official aerial demonstration team. They were established in 1953 and have been an iconic symbol of American airpower ever since. The team is composed of eight pilots, four officers and four enlisted personnel, who fly six F-16 Fighting Falcons during the Thunderbirds performances. The aircrafts are painted with red, white and blue colors to represent the national flag of the U.S., while also having a unique design for each pilot on their tails to distinguish them from one another in flight formations.
