Packing for Burning Man is about preparing to be part of a unique event. This guide will walk you through the essentials, ensuring you're ready for everything Black Rock City has to offer.

Packing the Essentials

First, read your Survival Guide. It's an important resource for navigating Black Rock City. When in doubt, consult it!

Your Ticket is essential. Keep it safe. Without it, you won't be able to enter the event.

Pack plenty of water. Plan for at least 1.5 gallons per person, per day. You'll be glad you did.

Bring enough food, focusing on easy-to-eat, low-MOOP (Matter Out Of Place) options.

Light up yourself and your bike to stay safe at night.

Bring goggles and dust masks. Dust storms can occur unexpectedly, and the dust can be unpleasant.

Keep clean with wet wipes. Maintaining hygiene is important for health and social reasons.

Explore and participate. Engage, contribute, and immerse yourself in this unique community. That's a key part of the Burning Man experience.

Leave No Trace (LNT). Make sure your camping spot is clean when you leave, just as it was when you arrived.

Remember, good preparation means you'll be able to fully enjoy your time among the art and the community. See you there!

Mastering Leave No Trace Principles

Staying Moop-Free during Prep and Playa Time

To reduce MOOP, remove unnecessary packaging before hitting the road. Rip off plastic wraps and cardboard from your supplies and recycle them at home. Less trash means less MOOP.

Smarter Water Use

Catch used water in a bucket instead of letting it hit the ground. Use biodegradable soap to minimize environmental impact. What you pack in, including water waste, you must pack out.

Burn Responsibly

Use designated fire pits or containers for nightly burns, and always clean up any ash or remnants.

Keeping the Air Clean

Use bikes or walk whenever possible. If you must drive, keep it slow and only use vehicles for essential transportation.

Recycle and Sort

Have a plan for sorting recyclables, compostables, and landfill waste. Keep separate bags or containers for each and utilize recycling programs when exiting the playa.

Respecting Restricted Areas

Stay within the designated areas for artwork, camping, and exploring to ensure our presence doesn't disturb the delicate ecosystems around us.

By incorporating these pointers into your Burn prep and experience, you're acting as a steward for the playa, preserving it for future generations of Burners.[1]

Community Participation and Gifting Culture

Participation and gifting are core practices that contribute to the unique nature of Black Rock City. Unlike traditional festivals, Burning Man is built on active involvement. You're not just an attendee; you're a part of the event.

Participation means contributing in your own way. Join volunteer teams, lead an activity, or share your talents. Engage with each moment openly.

Gifting is different from conventional transactions. At Burning Man, gifts are given freely, from cooling mist sprays to handcrafted items. Gifting is an unconditional sharing that enriches the community.[2]

Gifts don't have to be material. Acts of kindness, attentive listening, or shared laughter are valuable offerings. Even sharing your knowledge can be helpful to a first-timer.

Embrace participation and gifting fully. These acts create connections between individuals and contribute to the overall atmosphere of Black Rock City.
