The Gear

The gear we recommend is a good camera and the holy trinity.  A wide-angle lens.  14-24mm or something similar.  A 24-70mm or something similar and, of course, a 70-200mm or something similar.

If you do not have these particular lenses, do not worry; something similar will be just fine. It would be best if you also had a tripod.

This is located in Mount Royal Park and is the place you should be to find the most beautiful views of downtown Montreal. You are also able to get great shots of the St. Lawrence River and explore the mountain chalet that is nearby.

2. Farine Five Roses Neon Sign

This iconic sign reminds you of Montreal’s industrial heritage and is in neon red, sitting on top of the roof of the ADM flour mill building. The advertising sign can be seen from all around and is a nice reminder of the past.

3. Habitat 67

This is a model housing complex built in the 60s for the Montreal Expo. It is one of the most famous buildings in the country because of its unique and quirky design. It is located across from the Saint-Lawrence River.

4. St. Joseph’s Oratory

This is located on a mountainside and is a sanctuary made of multiple buildings. The style of architecture resembles those from the Italian Renaissance which makes the basilica a beautiful building to photograph. The dome at the top of the building is the highest point in the entire city, sitting at 155 meters high.

5. La Grand Roue de Montréal

This ferris wheel allows people to enjoy the view of the Old Port and the surrounding areas. You can get on it yourself to capture some bird’s eye view pictures or stand on the ground and photograph this ride from afar.

6. Dragon Flowers Florist

This is an iconic building in that area and is a very aesthetic storefront covered with flowers and white bird cages. It is a very distinct building and offers an interesting photo.

7. Champlain Bridge

This connects the city to the South Shore and is a bridge that is as significant to residents of Montreal as the Golden Gate Bridge is to San Francisco. The 60 shrouds are what is most significant and help to support the structure. Catch it at night when it is covered in thousands of lights.

8. Jean-Talon Market

This is a public market in Montreal that is visited by locals and tourists alike. The market has a festive air to it and there are usually lots of merchants and restaurateurs that offer goods. You can photograph stalls and take some nice items home as well.

9. Westmount Greenhouse

Located on the West side of the city this is a place that many people aren’t as familiar with but is a place that offers a lot of peace and beautiful photo opportunities. These greenhouses offer a lovely aesthetic with their white interiors and bold greens from the hundreds of plants.

10. Notre-Dame Basilica

This is a jewel of religious heritage here and is a site of national historic significance. There are millions of people that visit every year and with intricate architecture and beautifully colored stained glass windows, you will have lots of photos from visiting.

11. Orange Julep

This is a giant sphere that reminds people of an orange because of the color and the shape. It overlooks the Decarie highway and is now a snack bar that many first-time visitors will stop by. Pop in after for a taste of the Julep.

12. Jacques-Cartier Bridge

This bridge can be seen from many different points of the city. It crosses the Saint-Lawrence River and is beautiful especially at night when the area is all lit up.

13. Lachine Canal

This canal gives you a great view of the water as well as access to many of the neighborhoods in the area. This is a very photogenic location because it is always being used for biking, walking, and even activities on the water like peddling swan-shaped boats.

14. La Grande Bibliothèque

This library is located near the UQAM campus and is known by the full name of the Bibliotheque et Archives nationales du Québec. This is an absolutely stunning library with white rails, endless books, and lots of natural lighting.

15. Jacques Cartier Square

This square is located in Old Montreal and is filled with street artists, flowers, and lots of beautiful buildings. This is a great place to walk around and explore because there is always a lot going on.

This is located an hour outside of the city center but is worth the trip out. This is a lavender field  that reminds you of those in Provence. The beautiful rows of purple look stunning in any photo.

17. Jardin Botanique de Montréal

This is a beautiful garden space that has plenty of nature to explore from greenhouses to culture-specific landscaping exhibits. You can visit the Chinese and Japanese gardens as well as many others.

18. Frederick Back Park

This is an environmental rehabilitation project that saw a city dump transformed into a beautiful park. There are interesting circular structures out in the grass which makes any photo of the area look like a blend of nature and science-fiction.

19. Champs-de-Mars Station

This metro station is the one that most tourists will use to get to Vieux Montreal which makes it a convenient station that you will come across yourself while you’re exploring the city. You can use interesting lights and angles to create these shots.

20. Station Namur

This is a subway station that is the home of a giant sculpture called Systeme. It was created by Pierre Granche and sports a futuristic design. It lights up the entire station and makes a really cool photo opportunity.
